Learn the lesson of history! |

The piece by Robert H. Scales "Forgetting the Lessons of History" in the 1-8-12 SVH certainly caught my attention. However, the lessons of which he speaks differ completely from those that I've learned over my lifetime. Scales is concerned only that the U. S. military will face future wars short of boots on the ground.
The fact that he foresees future wars, rather than even the possibility of peace and diplomacy, teaches me a lot about his mindset--endless warfare by the American empire.
Haven't we poured enough lives of our young people, both killed and injured, and vast amounts of our national treasury into wars which benefit only the weapons manufacturers and the elites of society?
Yes, the dismal record of the American empire is fraught with warfare including World War I, World War II, Korea, Viet Nam/Cambodia, Grenada, Iraq I, Iraq II and Afghanistan and every one of these conflicts was sold to a "patriotic" America as justified by the "other's" action. When will we learn these lessons from our history?
And, the military has done a marvelous job of creating the "warrior" American empire. They have spread their bases and contracts throughout the nation with the goal of creating the holy grail of jobs, jobs, jobs which has resulted in Congressional support for the bases and military contractors and finally chamber of commerce and civilian efforts to secure those defense related jobs.
So, the beat goes on, and on, and on and folks like Scales wants more young people to fight our "just" wars for us and of course we have to keep producing newer and more exotic weapons systems because, well jobs and we just must be ready for endless warfare.
Indeed, when will we learn the lessons of history?
